Welcome to Japanese
The Japanese programme at Canterbury University is large and wide-ranging, catering for students' diverse backgrounds and vocational and academic needs. It offers a broad range of subjects at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, including language, literature, culture, geography, history, sociology, gender studies, theatre studies and cross-cultural psychology. Courses in the Programme are complemented by a number of specialized courses on Japanese history and music offered through the School of History and the School of Music respectively, and courses with some Japanese content in the Schools of Philosophy and Religious Studies, and Political Science and Communication.
The Japanese programme attracts students from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, as well as other faculties, including the Faculties of Visual and Performing Arts, Business and Economics, Engineering and Forestry, and Law. Students are encouraged to combine language studies with another discipline and to take double majors or degrees to maximise career opportunities.
Many of our graduates go on to make careers as translators and interpreters in government departments and service industries, and as teachers of Japanese in New Zealand schools. Others have taken up important positions in Foreign Affairs, become lawyers specializing in Japanese clientele, business people with international companies, or scholars producing significant research on Japan and/or securing lectureships in Japanese at various universities both in New Zealand and overseas.
